“This work uses the coat of arms as a format to allow the artist’s personal story to unfold.
While Spilliaert works with various mediums, such as mural painting and drawing, she now opted for ceramics to express herself. Confronting herself, she transforms the ancient institution of the coat of arms, a so-called masculine symbol, into a tender thing by adding her own personal kind of playfulness.
Each insect and sexual image is unique and fascinating, suggesting a hidden meaning.
Because of this year’s Corona crisis, each artist must have spent a lot of time facing his or her work, and that atmosphere can be felt deeply in this work. Although the work itself is not large in size, the view of the world radiating from it is immensely profound.”
