Hairy Tale is een in-situ installatie waarvoor ik vertrok vanuit de analogie tussen onze omgang met ons lichaamshaar en de begroeiing van onze tuinen. Het lichaamshaar en de tuin kunnen beide begrepen worden als grenzen tussen onszelf en de buitenwereld en fungeren als beschermlaag. Het lichaamshaar is een spanningsveld die de opdeling tussen mens, dier, kind, volwassene en gender blootstelt. De tuin is een terrein om diverse opvattingen over de natuur te etaleren. Beide vormen van natuurlijke groei zijn beheersbaar en bieden een podium waarop de identiteit van de eigenaar zichtbaar wordt.
Zowel de ingreep op het lichaamshaar als op de begroeiing van de tuin zijn onderhevig aan de overheersende normen en waarden van bepaalde culturen. De sociale druk om je lichaamshaar te verwijderen wordt alsmaar groter en het verwijderen van onverwachte plantengroei in de tuin en rondom het huis is een gangbare obsessie. Deze fenomenen geven me zo’n onbehaaglijk gevoel, dat ze me tot het creëren van dit werk brachten.
Voor Hairy Tale installeerde ik in de ruimte van Lichtekooi een heuvelachtig landschap van klei, dat bij nader inzien een groot lichaam vormt. Door de lichtblauwe kleur van de vloer lijkt de figuur op het water te drijven. De eilanden representeren verschillende lichaamsdelen die uit het imaginaire wateroppervlak prijken. Bij het binnentreden van de ruimte komt de bezoeker een been tegen waaruit zwarte sprieten groeien. Iets verderop volgen de schaamstreek, de buik en de navel, de borsten, de oksel en uiteindelijk het gezicht. Op elk eiland groeien diverse fragiele planten, die gemaakt zijn uit gebakken klei. Sommigen bloeien, andere dragen vruchten. Vele stengels hebben harige bladeren die, omwille van de schaal van het figuur, de grens tussen het lichaamshaar en planten doen vervagen. Vanuit het hoofd vertrekken kiezels als hoofdhaar, die naadloos overgaan in de werkelijke tuin van de tentoonstellingsruimte.
Het figuur, comfortabel en intiem met zichzelf en de begroeiing, staat in schril contrast met Wall of Hair, dat geïnstalleerd is in de doorgangsruimte naar de tuin. Dit werk bestaat uit 35 individueel ingekaderde wax-strips met lichaamsharen van bezoekers van de opening van de tentoonstelling. De ontharing werd uitgevoerd door Lisa Spilliaert die gekleed was als een domina, wat het pijnlijke en masochistische karakter van de ontharing benadrukte. De gebruikte strips zijn omkaderd in een worteldoek – een plastiek zeil dat gebruikt wordt om wildgroei tegen te houden in tuinen. Ik droeg eveneens een kostuum gemaakt uit worteldoek tijdens de opening waarmee ik de onderdrukking van lichaamshaar op humoristische wijze aankaartte.

このインスタレーション作品は、体毛の処理と庭の手入れの類似への着目を出発点としている。体毛と庭は、自分と外界の「境界線」、外側の保護層として興味深い類似性を示す。体毛は、人間と動物、子供と大人、ジェンダーの差異を露わにする場であり、庭は、自然に対する概念を形成する場である。どちらも自然に成長するものを自己管理でき、自身のアイデンティティを可視化する舞台となる。
体毛と庭への介入は、その時々のモラルや文化に左右される。近年、体毛を処理することへの社会的圧力はますます高まっている。また、庭や家の周りに生えている予期せぬ植物を取り除くことは、許容された一般的な強迫観念である。これらの現象が私の心に深く響き、制作の動機となった。
展示スペースには、粘土で作られた丘のような庭園が広がっている。歩くにつれ、それが一つの大きな身体であることがわかる。水色の床によって、その姿はあたかも水の上に浮いているかのように見える。数々の丘は、この想像上の水の上に隆起した身体の部位によって形成されている。まず、うっそうと茂る黒い芽の生えた脚があり、次に陰部、腹とへそ、乳房、脇の下、そして最後に顔に出会う。それぞれの部位からは、焼いた粘土でできた多種多様な植物が自生している。あるものは花を咲かせ、あるものは果実をつけている。多くの茎からは毛のような葉が生えており、身体のスケールの大きさゆえに、体毛と植物の境界線が曖昧になっている。頭からは、多くの小石が毛髪として現れ、展示スペースの裏にある庭へと流れ出ている。
体毛／植物と心地よく共生するこの身体の様子は、庭への通路脇に展示された作品「髪の壁」とは対照的だ。この作品は、展覧会のオープニングでのパフォーマンスに参加した35名の体毛をワックスで剥がし、一枚ずつ額装したものである。脱毛の痛々しさとマゾヒスティックな性質を強調するために、ドミナの格好をした人物（リサ・スピリアールト）によって施術が行われ、毛のこびりついたワックスは、防草シートに空けられた楕円形の開口部によって縁取られた。オープニングの間、私自身も防草シートで作られた衣装を着用し、ユーモアを交えながら体毛への抑圧を表現した。

Hairy Tale is an in-situ installation based on the analogy between our handling of our body hair and the vegetation in our gardens. Body hair and gardens can equally be understood as borders between ourselves and the outside world, and operate as protective layers. Body hair is a field of tension that exposes the division between human, animal, child, adult and gender. The garden is a terrain to shape conceptions of nature. Both natural growth are manageable and provide a stage on which the owner’s identity becomes visible.
Both the intervention on body hair and vegetation in gardens are subject to the prevailing norms of specific cultures. The social pressure to remove one’s body hair is increasing and removing unexpected vegetation in the garden and around the house is a common obsession. This phenomenon touches me deeply and encouraged me to create this work.
For Hairy Tale, I created a hilly landscape in clay in Lichtekooi, which upon closer inspection turns out to be a large body. The floor’s light blue color makes the figure appear to float on water. The clay islands form body parts that rise above the imaginary water surface. At the bottom of the space is the leg, on which grow black sprites. Next comes the pubic area, the belly and the navel, the breasts, the armpit and finally the face. Various fragile plants, made of fired clay, grow on each island.  Some bloom, others have fruits. Many stems have hairy leaves that, because of the scale of the figure, blur the boundary between the body hair and plants. From the scalp grow little stones that continue into the actual garden of the exhibition space.
The figure, comfortable and intimate with itself and the vegetation, stands in stark contrast to the Wall of Hair, exhibited in the passageway to the garden. This work consists of 35 individually framed wax strips with body hair of visitors of the exhibition’s opening. The waxing was performed by Lisa Spilliaert, who was dressed as a domina, to emphasize the painful and masochistic nature of the depilation. The strips were framed in anti-root cloth – a black plastic tarp used to prevent weeds from growing in gardens. I also wore a costume made out of this anti-root cloth during the opening to humorously criticize our social oppression of body hair.
