Embossing and pigments on paper

Voor RHIZOMA te MASEREEL creëerde ik een site-specifiek werk genaamd Trianal. Deze editie maakt deel uit van dit project en behandelt het vaak onuitgesproken, alledaagse thema van toiletbezoek.
Ik raakte geïnspireerd door de Kempense boerderij traditie ‘streuselhoop’, een stapel bosbladeren die verzameld en gebruikt werden voor stallen – en als toiletpapier. Dit rauwe contact met bladeren staat in schril contrast met modern toiletpapier, waar de enige overgebleven link met de natuur te vinden is in embossing van fauna en flora.
In de buurt van MASEREEL verzamelde ik gevallen eikenbladeren en drukte ik telkens één af op papier ter grootte van een velletje toiletpapier. In het midden van het blad is een anus geëmbosseerd, waardoor het contact tussen een lichaam en een blad weer voelbaar wordt.

MASEREELのビエンナーレRHIZOMAにおけるプロジェクト「Trianal」の一環として、トイレットペーパーにまつわるエディション作品を制作しました。
ベルギー北部・ケンペン地域の農耕の伝統である「Streuselhoop」は、牛舎の床にまくために森の落ち葉を集めて積み上げたもので、その一部はトイレットペーパーとして使われてきました。この落ち葉との直接的な触れ合いと、自然との繋がりが動植物のエンボス・装飾プリントにのみ残っている現代のトイレットペーパーとの対照に興味を持ちました。
MASEREELの近隣で、オークの落ち葉を集め、トイレットペーパー1枚分の大きさの紙にプリントしました。葉の中央には肛門の模様がエンボス加工されており、身体と落ち葉の触れ合いを蘇らせています。

For RHIZOMA at MASEREEL, I created a site-specific work named Trianal. This edition is part of this project, handling the often unspoken, everyday topic of toilet visits.
I was inspired by the Kempen farming tradition ‘streuselhoop’, a pile of forest leaves collected and used for stables – and as toilet paper. This raw contact with leaves stands in stark contrast to modern toilet paper, where the only remaining link to nature is found in embossed patterns of fauna and flora.
In the neighborhood of MASEREEL, I collected fallen oak leaves and printed one leaf on paper that corresponds to the size of a single sheet of toilet paper. In the middle of the leaf, an anus pattern is embossed, making the contact between a body and a leaf tangible again.
