Na de Europese bloemenmotieven in Hortus Conclusus onderzocht te hebben, keerde ik terug naar de traditionele bloemschikkunst van Japan. Het is mijn eigen interpretatie van de essentiële houding van Ikebana om de natuur binnenshuis te nemen en ze te vereren: een cultureel uitwisselingsproduct. De gedroogte planten zijn afkomstig uit mijn nabije buurt. Door het miniatuurformaat heeft het werk een intiem karakter. Het ontwerpen van deze reeks vazen zette me aan tot het werken met keramiek.

「閉ざされた庭園(Hortus Conclusus)」のモチーフに対応するものとして、日本の伝統芸術である生け花に着目した。 両者は全く異なる文化に由来するが、瞑想的な性格と親密なスケールにおいて興味深い共通点がある。 自然を室内に取り入れ、純化して崇拝するという生け花の本質への関心が、このシリーズを生み出す動機となった。中世の修道女たちが信仰心からミニチュアの動植物を作り、木箱の中に世界を構成したように、花瓶を描き、 身近な植物の押し葉・花をそこに配置したシリーズ作品。この一連の花瓶のデザイン制作が、陶芸を始めるきっかけとなる。

Beside the European flower motifs that appear in Hortus Conclusus, I am fascinated by the traditional Japanese flower arrangement, Ikebana. Although originating from a completely different culture, Ikebana flower arrangements carry profound similarities, especially in their meditative and intimate character. Ikebana essentially takes nature indoors, reshaping nature as it were into a composition that can be worshipped. Such re-creation of nature is what inspired the present series. Designing this series of vases in turn encouraged me to start working with ceramics.
